Enriching the social wellbeing of Calgary through artistic practice or arts programming.
On an annual basis, Calgary’s Mayor and Calgary Arts Development hosts a celebration to support the arts in Calgary. Cultural, government and corporate leaders gather to recognize the vitality of the arts sector in our city and present the annual Cultural Leaders Legacy Awards.
In 2012, the SANDSTONE City Builder Award was established to recognize artists or arts organizations that make Calgary a better place to live. This cash award is intended to assist an artist or arts company to continue their work and extend their artistic reach. Submissions are judged by a jury of artistic peers and community members, based on artistic impact, impact on the community, and impact on the artist.
SANDSTONE proudly presented the 2022 City Builder Award to Casa Mexico Foundation. For the past 13 years, Casa Mexico has been constantly fostering the growth of emerging artists within our city. Casa Mexico Foundation strives to remain an open door for the integration of Mexican culture within Calgary, and their programs have been very successful in achieving this goal. The support they have received from the community has been integral to their success. Casa Mexico strongly believes that “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”.
Past recipients of the SANDSTONE City Builder Award include: Onalea Gilbertson, Antyx Community Arts Society, Studio C, Quickdraw Animation Society, The New Gallery, Inside Out Theatre, JP Thibodeau, Femme Wave, and Lisa Murphy Lamb (Loft 112).
